I think of it as the Big One – my own personal Pearl Harbor, World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina. The sneak attack that smashed my career, shattered my dream of having a family, plunged me into physical and financial panic, and left me in a strange underworld with an unbreathable atmosphere.

At first I thought that if I just held my breath and swam hard enough, I’d find my way back to the surface, the known world. Instead, I’ve had to learn how to breathe under water.
